Chapter 6
âWhat was that?â Kenna asked in shock.
Cecily shook her head and took off running. The scream came from downstairs, and she took them two at a time, conscious that people were following her. The only things of note downstairs were the massive laundry room, the underground garage, and the basement. She opted for the laundry room and ran in to find a maid staring at a pile of laundry in horror.
âWhat happened?â Cecily asked, making her way over to the terrified woman.
The maid looked at her, her face completely devoid of color. She pointed with a shaky hand. Her other hand was holding her mouth closed. The poor woman couldnât look back at what had caused her to scream, so she turned away and covered her eyes with her hands.
Unfortunately, the sight would forever be burned into her eyelids. For a long time, it would be all she saw when she closed her eyes and tried to sleep. Cecily took a deep breath and stepped forward.
She felt as though she were moving through water. There was a feeling of unreality that made her feel weightless and the air around her feel heavy. She swam through it, taking another deep breath. There, almost hidden among the dirty white linen, was Vanessa.
Cecily recoiled and covered her mouth in horror. She looked up to see Marianna come into the room with a worried frown. When she saw Cecilyâs reaction, she froze in terror, her eyes moving to where Vanessa lay.
Cecily wanted to go to her new boss and give her a hug. What came next would be extremely difficult. No hotel owner needed a murder victim in the laundry. Marianna closed her eyes, as if accepting her fate, then turned around and walked out again.
âCome on,â Cecily said, taking the maid away and gesturing for everyone to leave. âwe need to get out of here.â
âShe was just lying there,â the maid said, curling into Cecilyâs side as they walked. âI didnât know she was there. I did two loads before I found her. She was lying there the whole time.â
âItâs okay,â Cecily said, rubbing her arm comfortingly.
Once they got to the top of the stairs, a fellow maid came over and took Cecilyâs place.
âI guess Cole was wrong,â Cecily said faintly as she walked over to Kenna.
âNo kidding,â Kenna scoffed, her face pale.
Cecily shook her head as she tried to clear her thoughts. It didnât work. She made her way to the kitchen on autopilot, knowing that it was the only way for her to calm down and think properly.
The kitchen was empty at this time of the day, although Cecily knew she didnât have long until the place was overrun by the other chefs trying to do their job. Kenna walked in behind her, and took a seat at the island, watching Cecily carefully.
The image of Vanessa lying amongst the white sheets was seared into her brain. She flicked the oven on and chose the necessary temperature without thinking. Then, she walked around the kitchen, collecting everything she needed.
